The latest series of illegal signs along Aldershot’s Plains Road corridor may persist for some time. The signs are located within the public boulevard. That is the area between the sidewalk and the curb of the road. The city’s sign bylaw does not allow signs on the boulevard in order to protect Aldershot’s main street from messy debris and to ensure a level playing field for all retailers.

The latest signs, promoting a cannabis shop, have already been on the boulevard for several weeks.

The city’s bylaw enforcement office, which is actually located at the Aldershot Arena, is taking no action to remove the signs.

Some of the signs in question.

“Enforcement is done on a complaint basis; resources do not allow for proactive patrols for signage. If there are specific areas that need to be addressed, residents can file a complaint by contacting 905-335-7731 or bylaw@burlington.ca,” according to a statement from City Hall.

There is a hope that the bylaw enforcement situation will improve in the next four years as staff are requesting budget approval for 21 more enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, the Aldershot Arena community room remains unavailable to Aldershot groups. It has been occupied by the Bylaw Department since November of 2020 with no end in sight. The temporary move to Aldershot was made necessary by renovations at its home base on Harvester Road.
