Eden Wood is running for councillor in Ward 4 and participated in the Ward 4 “Meet the Candidates” event at Port Nelson United Church this week, organized by the Roseland Community Organization.  We are pleased that all Ward 4 council candidates attended, particularly given the good turnout for the event.

Eden has been out meeting residents since June and describes herself as “passionate about community.” Eden is hearing that the most important issues to residents are development, including affordable housing, long-term care, and more options for people to live. With more people moving to Burlington, Eden is concerned about Burlington’s housing supply and knows that many residents are concerned about density. She distinguishes between density and high-rises and wants to work with developers and builders to encourage affordable housing. She is supportive of intensified hubs near transit, which offer good opportunities for improved walkability and affordability. She has also heard from local groups, including a need for accessible public washrooms in Iroquois Park, similar to the facilities provided at Brant Hills and Tansley Woods.

Eden lives in Ward 4, and was previously a member of the city’s Crime Prevention Committee. That committee involvement got her interested in completing the Citizen Police Academy, a ten-week program offered by the Halton Regional Police Service. She has been making parenting her priority since 2017, when she left her work in accounts payable. Eden’s website is https://edenwoodward4.ca/ and she indicated that she has lived in wards 1, 2, 4, and 5 at different points in time. “For our neighbourhood” is a slogan you will see on her website and on her election signage. Eden has been watching committee/council meetings and doing her research in order to prepare for the role of councillor.

A supporter of C40 Cities (see https://www.c40.org/), she notes the importance of engaging citizens in confronting climate change. Transitioning our energy system, use of electric vehicles, and encouraging households to limit themselves to one car where possible are examples given during our interview. Eden’s website also notes green space as a priority:  protecting essential green space and preserving existing tree canopy city-wide.

Tony Brecknock, Olivia Duke, Shawna Stolte, and Eden Wood are the candidates for councillor in Ward 4.
