Soccer fans across Burlington and Oakville will have plenty of opportunities to experience the excitement of the FIFA World Cup this summer, with free public watch parties, community celebrations, and a new neighbourhood grant program encouraging residents to come together through the beautiful game.

The City of Burlington has launched a special edition of its Love My Neighbourhood initiative, reimagined as Soccer in My Neighbourhood for the tournament. The program encourages residents to organize local gatherings that celebrate soccer while bringing neighbours together through food, culture, and community spirit.

Eligible Burlington residents can apply for grants of up to $500 to host neighbourhood watch parties, family soccer tournaments, or multicultural celebrations inspired by the World Cup. The funding can be used to help cover eligible event expenses, while organizers can also receive free access to city park space or up to three hours at a city facility, road closure permits on approved streets, staff support, and access to event insurance when required.

The program is open to Burlington residents hosting gatherings of fewer than 250 people, creating opportunities for neighbours to proudly display their countries’ colours, share international cuisine, and celebrate the diverse cultures represented throughout the tournament.

One of the largest celebrations will take place on Thursday, July 9, at Spencer Smith Park. The free, family-friendly fan experience runs from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and will feature a massive outdoor screen broadcasting a live FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match beginning at 4 p.m.

The event will also include youth soccer skills challenges, cultural performances, music, selfie stations, guest appearances, and activities for all ages. A beer garden will be open from noon until 9 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets for seating, while those bringing lawn chairs will be directed to a designated viewing area. The city is also encouraging attendees to use public transit or active transportation whenever possible.

For fans looking to catch matches throughout the tournament, Oakville’s Stack BBQ Smokehouse at Oakville Place is transforming into a World Cup Viewing Lounge from June 11 through July 19. Guests can watch matches on the big screen while enjoying a special tournament menu, giveaways, and opportunities to win prizes.

Film.ca Cinemas in Oakville is also inviting soccer supporters to cheer on Team Canada during its Round of 32 matchup against South Africa on Sunday, June 28. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. ahead of the 3 p.m. kickoff. Admission is free, with tickets available only in person on game day and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Whether gathering in neighbourhood parks, cheering alongside thousands at Spencer Smith Park, or watching from community venues across Burlington and Oakville, residents will have numerous opportunities to experience the FIFA World Cup together while celebrating the diversity and community spirit that soccer inspires.
