Burlington Public Library customers saved a total of $28.9 million by borrowing books and other items from the library in 2025, according to the library’s recently published annual report.
“In a time where affordability is top of mind and rates of loneliness are rising, Burlington residents are choosing their local library as a space to connect to people, resources, and local events,” said Lita Barrie, Chief Executive Officer at Burlington Public Library. “We are extremely grateful for the support from the community, whether you borrowed a book, used our spaces, or attended a free program.”
What is Burlington borrowing?
Library customers borrowed, streamed, and accessed more than 2.1 million books and items in 2025. eAudiobooks saw a major jump between 2024 and 2025, with an 18% increase in borrowing for this format. While digital formats are rising in popularity, physical books remain the most popular, surpassing more than 1 million borrows again in 2025.
The library also saw more than 1 million visits last year, highlighting the importance of in-person experiences and connections through library spaces, technology, and programs. Responding to feedback from the community, the Library enhanced its spaces with the opening of New Appleby Branch at the Robert Bateman Community Centre and new bookable free meeting rooms to offer more spaces, especially for quiet work or study.
Beyond the library
The impact of the library goes beyond its doors. According to a library survey of more than 4,600 people, 96% agree that the library improves the well-being of the community as a whole. In 2025, Burlington Public Library created over $59 million in total economic impact. For each Burlington resident, the Library provided $320 in economic value.
The library is free to join if you live, work, go to school, or pay property taxes in Burlington. You can register for a digital card online, or visit one of our branches.
