October 19 is International Repair Day and the Burlington Repair Cafe wants to celebrate it in a big way — with two locations at the same time: Burlington City Hall, 426 Brant Street, and Burlington Centre mall, Guelph Line at Fairview (inside across from the Cogeco store). Both locations will operate between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
At City Hall, in addition to our usual repair event, we will host musical entertainers “the Arthur Duo,” simple textile repairs, and an outdoor tent with Rolling Horse Community Cycle www.rollinghorse.ca. Families can bring their bicycles for a tune-up (there may be a slight charge) or just get tips on bicycle maintenance.
Residents are invited to bring their broken/damaged small household appliances (toasters, hair dryers, rice cookers), mechanical items (fans, lamps, decorations, shredders), some toys and decorations — basically anything that does not have a circuit board. Our volunteer ‘fixers’ use their knowledge to repair your item, while you watch and possibly assist so that you can keep on using those beloved items and keep them out of the landfill site.
Also on that day, the BurlingtonGreen environmental association will be holding a Zero-Waste drop-off in the northwest parking lot of Burlington Centre (mall). They will accept electronics and a list of other items to be responsibly recycled. More info at: www.burlingtongreen.org/events/take-action-day.
Due to demand, we ask residents to email us at burlingtonrepaircafe@cogeco.ca to reserve a time slot and tell us what they’d like to bring and to which location.
The Burlington Repair Cafe is a volunteer-run group that normally operates in different locations around the city, once a month. Please visit our Facebook page for updates: www.facebook.com/Burlington.Canada.Repair.Cafe.
