April 24, 2024 — The Regional Municipality of Halton

The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, alongside The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, and The Honourable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Oakville, were at Halton Regional Centre on Wednesday making an announcement to highlight Budget 2024 measures focused on building homes on public lands.

“Halton Region is one of the fastest growing communities in the country and creating more housing options is a top priority,” said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “We have active and construction-ready projects in our housing portfolio that position us well to increase our assisted and supportive housing supply. Strong partnerships and funding from all levels of government are critical to get housing built as fast as possible. We look forward to continuing to work together with our federal partners.”

As part of Halton’s Comprehensive Housing Strategy, Halton Region is creating new assisted and supportive housing units on lands owned by Halton Region. With construction underway and additional projects in various stages of pre-development as well as a strong commitment to deliver the required housing-enabling infrastructure, the region is ready to deliver more assisted housing opportunities to increase housing supply.

Active construction underway include:

  • 265 Kerr Street, Oakville: This new 4-storey building will provide 52 assisted housing rental apartments for older adults of which 22 are for supportive housing, with expected completion in 2024.
  • 1258 Rebecca Street, Oakville: This project will provide 14 semi-detached, one-bedroom bungalows for supportive and assisted housing for seniors, with expected completion in 2025.

The region has also identified 600 new purpose-built rental and assisted-living housing opportunities and invested heavily to ensure these projects are shovel-ready. Sites continue to be added to this portfolio as they are identified.

Halton Region is an active partner with all levels of government to support building more homes faster.
