April 4, 2024 — BurlingtonGreen

Spring is here and the planet needs us to take action! BurlingtonGreen has many upcoming activities for the whole family, work teams and other groups to get outside in the fresh air while helping local nature.

Community Clean Up
Happening now through Oct 30, Community Clean Up is an eco-action opportunity for everyone in Burlington to get involved in collecting litter from parks, streams, schoolyards and neighbourhoods.

“This year we aim to see 12,000 people participate. Everyone in Burlington is invited to organize a clean-up and register it with us so we can track, measure and share the impact we have achieved, together,” says Amy Schnurr, executive director of BurlingtonGreen.

Free bags, gloves and tip sheets are available, and a handy map on the event webpage displaying the many clean-up locations that groups have chosen to clean up in Burlington. And there is an opportunity to participate in a nationwide Butt Blitz to collect and recycle 1 million cigarette butts!

Solar eclipse glasses recycling
The local environmental charity will also collect solar eclipse glasses for recycling on Monday, April 8, at its Eco-Hub headquarters at Burlington Beach (1094 Lakeshore Road), where the BG team will be on hand 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. sharing eco-action information and hosting a 60-minute drop-in Beach Clean Up Blitz at 11 a.m. (BG will NOT be providing glasses on April 8.)

Used glasses will also be collected on April 8 at Spencer Smith Park, and after April 8 at Burlington Centre’s Zero Waste Zone. If you can’t get to one of these drop-off centres, BurlingtonGreen urges you to save your glasses for future eclipses or pull apart the glasses to recycle the cardboard portion and discard or repurpose the lenses.

Community Tree Planting
On Saturday, April 20, BurlingtonGreen and the City of Burlington Forestry Department host a Community Tree Planting, 9:30 a.m. to noon at Pathfinder Park. Advance registration is required.

Earth Day celebration and beach clean-up
Celebrate Earth Day at the beach with BurlingtonGreen on Saturday, April 27, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at their Eco-Hub (1094 Lakeshore Road). Community members can join a Beach Litter Clean Up and Butt Blitz at 11 a.m., spin to win with the Eco-Trivia wheel, make buttons and pollinator seed balls, add messages to the Hope Globe, pick up some climate action resources, and more!

Electronic (and other) Waste Drop off with Repair Cafe on May 25
BurlingtonGreen’s Zero Waste Drop-Off event returns to Burlington Centre mall on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Electronic and other waste will be collected to be properly recycled. Presented in collaboration with Tech Genius Burlington, the event also features the Burlington Repair Cafe in the Centre’s Community Hub from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to fix smaller household items.
