Burlington Public Library (BPL) is launching a new hands-on learning centre called DiscoverySpace at the Central branch.

The new space will be open to the public on Jan. 8 and is located on the second floor of the branch, near the children’s area. It is a hands-on zone that is focused on families who want to learn, create, and build together.

The idea for DiscoverySpace came about after customer feedback emerged asking for more programming for children who have aged out of early-years programming such as story-time. They wanted something more engaging — something that they could build.

“Everything about this space was developed to inspire the kids who visit,” said Tammy Csajaghy, BPL’s programming and partnerships manager, who helped lead the project. “From the courtyard decor to the interactive tables, the Lego wall, and beyond. We want kids to enter the room and feel empowered to explore and create.”

Families can drop in anytime during open hours and take advantage of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) concepts through numerous self-directed activities. As it is a self-guided space, kids can just grab an activity bin from the collection of supplies, toys, and technology and start creating. There is also a computer available for those who want to tinker with animation.

STEAM programming is in high demand and BPL intends to meet that need with this new creation.

Where the DiscoverySpace is currently used to be home to an adult Makerspace, with tools such as laser and 3D printers, vinyl cutters, printers, and an embroidery machine. That was moved up to the third floor of the branch during the pandemic, creating an opening in the second-floor space, according to BPL CEO Lita Barrie.

“We saw an opportunity to repurpose this space in a way that we could make that technology more readily available,” Barrie said. “We were confident if we could create the space for them, that they’ll come out and be able to have that experience.”

Unless otherwise stated, the DiscoverySpace will be open weekday afternoons and some evenings and weekends. Hours are as follows:

  • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DiscoverySpace will be home to some of BPL’s free registered and drop-in programs for children. There will also be weekly free scheduled programs with a focus on science, technology, and art. During scheduled programs, it will be reserved for the program participants.

“We’re so thrilled to introduce this new service,” said Barrie. “It’s all about inspiring discovery, which is a core part of the Library’s vision.”
