By Lee-Ann Meyer, volunteer at the Burlington Humane Society

We featured Sassafras before on Local-news.ca’s Adoptable Pet of the Week feature (twice!), but we’re trying again as Sass has been at the Burlington Humane Society (BHS) for over a year now. We’re hoping that the right dog-loving person will read this and head over to BHS to meet her!

I am Sass, a.k.a. Sassafras or Sassy, and I am a Newfie/German shepherd mix, and just over two years old. I’m a large breed girl with an even bigger heart.

I am the longest-term canine resident at the Burlington Humane Society and have been here since I was surrendered in June 2022. I am very happy at the shelter as I have a much better life now than where I came from but I would really love a home of my own.

I enjoy car rides, walks, playing, swimming, pup cups from Starbucks, and going on adventures with the volunteers. I love other dogs and even the cats at the shelter are my friends.

I am muzzle-trained and I always wear my muzzle when I’m off the property and in public, as I am still learning about the outside world and that not all people are bad people. Humans call this behaviour “stranger danger.”

I have been working really hard since I arrived at the shelter and everyone says that I am making great progress when meeting new people. It takes time for me to trust new people but as they say, “all good things come to those that wait.”

I’m looking for a spacious adult-only home, as I’m a big girl with a big personality. My new family will need to continue to work with me as I adjust to this new world I’m living in.

I love to play and run around. Snow and water are two of my favourite things. A fenced-in yard would be awesome, then I can play all day long. The Newfie in me LOVES the cold and the snow and I would sleep outside if I had it my way…but these humans think I’m going to freeze and tuck me into my warm bed inside my heated kennel at night lol…

During the summer, I spent my days in the pool and running through the sprinklers. Just imagine all the fun we can enjoy together on those hot summer days.

I’m extremely affectionate with the people I’ve gotten to know and trust and nothing makes me happier than spending time with the humans at the shelter. I adore the people that I feel safe with and I will do anything with them. I’ve overheard the humans say that I’m their favourite at the shelter…P.S. …please don’t let the other dogs know…

If you are looking for a loyal and loving best friend, look no further. You can read more about me on the website at  www.burlingtonhumane.ca.

Lots of cuddles and kisses, Sass.

Sass is available for adoption through the Burlington Humane Society. If you fall in love and want to adopt one of the pets featured in “Adoptable Pet of the Week,” go to the Adopt a Cat or Kitten or the Adopt a Dog or Puppy page on their website for more information on how to proceed.
