The City of Burlington is preparing for a temporary display of public art signs by calling for Burlington writers and artists to submit their work for consideration. The signs are to be exhibited on the Beachway as part of the Ontario Culture Days program, which runs from Sept. 22 to Oct. 15, 2023. The 20 chosen artists will each be paid $400 for the use of their work.

Submissions must be displayable in a sign format; permissible mediums are wide-ranging, from visual art, illustration, photography, poetry, short stories, photos of fashion, sculpture, and more. Artists and writers can create new work or submit an existing work, and must be suitable for all ages, legible to pedestrians, and in sufficiently high resolution to allow for printing.

To submit a piece of work, applicants must fill out the online application form found here by 11:59 p.m. on July 14, 2023. Further information can be found here.

Ontario Culture Days began in 2010, and seeks to engage the public with art, by fostering appreciation for art, and promoting interaction between the public and those who create art. Organizers of Ontario Culture Days events can be individual artists, a member of a collective, or a municipality or other organization; events should be free or “pay-what-you’d like,” and “should have a participatory element, inviting the public into the creative process.”
