Stand-up comedy fans should be delighted to hear that storied comedian and veteran broadcaster Rick Mercer will be hosting a live taping of the Rick Mercer and Friends stand-up special right here in Burlington on the main stage of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

The show is set to run through the weekend of September 18 with two performances each night, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. without intermission. It promises to showcase sets from an impressive lineup of Canada’s newest and most notable stand-up comedians in addition to several sets from Mercer himself.

The performances will be recorded and subsequently released for later broadcast by the CBC. Those unable to attend in person can look forward to seeing an edited version of the special in its entirety on CBC Television this fall once filming and post-production has concluded.

Unfortunately for anyone without tickets who wants to see the show live, the television broadcast version will have to suffice. As of September 3, all four shows have completely sold out, an impressive bounce-back for a theatre season dogged by pandemic restrictions and low patronage, with audiences reluctant to attend indoor events in the face of COVID-19’s continued spread.

For the lucky 130 patrons able to book tickets to attend the live sets, indoor restrictions will still be in effect, including reduced capacity to promote social distancing and masking when possible, all in accordance with provincial phase 3 restrictions. In addition, the theatre is joining other indoor venues in asking that attendees provide proof of double vaccination prior to entering the venue, ahead of the incoming provincial mandate.

The main stage normally hosts 260 patrons, reduced to 130 due to COVID restrictions.

As for anyone feeling like they missed out on a great opportunity to witness some of Canada’s best comedians on the stage (or to just get out on the town), take solace in knowing that the Burlington Performing Arts Centre has even more performances lined up for the autumn season, including a one-night show from iconic Canadian rockers the Stampeders on November 12. Those interested may also be keen to hear that a Burlington Performing Arts Centre membership offers advance notice of upcoming shows and productions, front-of-line access to tickets and discounted tickets to “BPAC Presents” productions, free admission to select performances, and additional discounts with local business partners. Additionally, members receive access to a private lounge to eat, drink, and socialize before the show, and will also receive recognition in the playbill for their generous contribution to the local arts.
