The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) is asking for the community’s assistance to send at least 200 students of the Halton District School Board Back to School next month with basic necessities that can help kids succeed.
“Every parent wants to send their kids back to school with classroom supplies, as well as new clothes and shoes that fit them, but that is simply out of reach for many Halton families,” says Marc Clare, HLF’s CEO. “We want every child to start the school year with the resources they need to focus on learning and to be included with their peers.
“Already we have had parents crying on the phone; they were so grateful to learn that we could help them out before classes begin.”
HLF helps eliminate financial barriers to learning for students throughout the school year by providing gift cards for basic necessities like food, clothing and hygiene items, as well as reimbursement for learning opportunities such as teams, co-op placements and class trips. Requests to HLF are made by school staff on behalf of students or their families.
In 2022–2023, HLF responded to more than 2,000 requests from school staff to support students in need. That was an increase of more than 30% over the previous year, reflecting the fact that more families are struggling with the high cost of living.
