Burlington residents in Wards 1 and 2 will have the opportunity to vote in a by-election for the seat of school board trustee for Halton District School Board (HDSB) from May 15 to May 29. This election is an opportunity for eligible voters to choose the individual who will represent their interests and make decisions that will shape the educational experience of students in HDSB.
This by-election comes off the back of the February resignation of Matthew Diodati. Diodati was elected in October 2022; his resignation less than four months later was due to health challenges and family circumstances.
Eligibility to vote in the by-election is based on several criteria, including Canadian citizenship, residency in Burlington Wards 1 or 2, and support for the English public school board. Voters who cast their ballot for a school board trustee from Halton Catholic District School Board or either French school board during the 2022 Burlington Municipal Election in October 2022 are not eligible to vote in the by-election. Please call 905-335-7777, ext. 7805 or email elections@burlington.ca to register.
Voters will have three voting options, including internet voting from May 15 to May 19, in-person at advance polls on Wednesday, May 24, and in-person on election day, Monday, May 29.
For those interested in running as a candidate in the 2023 HDSB school trustee by-election, nomination papers must be filed by April 14, 2023. Nomination forms are available at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall, and individuals can file their nomination during regular business hours, but by appointment only. All required paperwork must be submitted before the deadline to be considered as a candidate.
An information session for residents interested in running as a candidate in the by-election will be held virtually on Thursday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. This session is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the process, requirements, and expectations of a trustee and clarify any questions or concerns that potential candidates may have.
The HDSB school board trustee plays an essential role in the education system’s governance and decision-making process. So if you are a Ward 1 or 2 resident, remember to exercise your democratic right and make a difference in the education system in Burlington by voting in this HDSB by-election.
