Spotted in Burlington this weekend: Mike Duhacek, pulling a 200-lb snowmobile sled along Dundas Street on the last leg of his journey from Owen Sound to the Halton Regional Police Service headquarters. On the snowmobile sled were the rounds of pine with engraved letters spelling out “CANCER.”
The purpose of this long, cold, heavily-burdened walk? To raise money and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society, and to bury cancer — literally, first, by burying the pine letters he carried so far, and, ultimately, the disease itself. His website is appropriately called helpmeburycancer.com.
Duhacek began the 208 km trek on Feb. 4 from Kelso Beach, walking south through village and small town alike, before turning east onto Dundas St., where he was cheered on early Sunday, Feb. 11 by Burlington residents who saw him and his police escort. Sasha Grenci took photos as she was passing by, and kindly shared them with us.
