Artists, arts and cultural collectives, non-profits, charities, and multicultural groups can now put in their applications to the Burlington Arts and Culture Fund grant for up to $7,000 to support their projects. The deadline is 12 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2023.
This grant has supported many excellent past projects, including the Halton Black History Awareness Society’s summertime day-long music and cultural event, the Halton Freedom Celebration Festival; Redleaf Cultural Integration’s Lunar New Year Celebration Gala; the Tottering Biped Theatre’s Summer Shakespeare Project, which consisted of an outdoor, immersive presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; and the Telling Tales Festival, whose home is now Burlington’s Royal Botanical Gardens.
To be eligible to apply, the individual or organization must be located in Burlington and be one of the following:
An individual artist or arts and cultural collective (defined as three or more individuals) that exhibit high achievement in arts and culture programming
An incorporated not-for-profit arts and culture organization, or a charitable arts and culture organization
A multicultural group that fulfills a significant role in the Burlington community through the arts and culture
City of Burlington
Applicants must first email artsandculturefund@burlington.ca for an application package, and then submit a workplan and budget alongside the completed online application.
Projects will be assessed for their artistic merit: projects must make a contribution to the development of Burlington’s arts and culture, with evidence of innovation or unique opportunities for artists, the public, or other arts and cultural organizations, as well as have a thorough workplan. The program merit and strategic initiative are also evaluated, meaning that project outcomes should be clearly described and align with the city’s Strategic Plan goals. In terms of arts and culture, the city aims to build community through art and cultural community activities.
The final two assessment criteria are citywide and community impact and economic impact. Included within these two criteria are demonstrated support from the local community and effective partnerships with other local organizations and businesses, outreach to the public, opportunities for local artists and contractors in the form of training or employment, and attraction of tourists to Burlington.
Evaluation of the applications’ artistic merit will be carried out by a jury of peers (artists, arts and cultural professionals, individuals with expertise in the subject matter), while City of Burlington staff will evaluate the program merit and strategic initiative, citywide and community impact, and economic impact.
