It has been years. In fact, it’s been over six years.
The project has supposedly been shelved, yet five re-development signs remain on the property of the Georgian Court Estates in east Aldershot. Their continuing presence is seen as a kind of sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of residents who opposed the redevelopment plan from the very beginning.
The owner of the 8.4 hectare site, QuadReal Property Group, applied to the city years ago for the gradual demolition of the existing 280 townhomes and maisonettes, to be followed by the construction of 1,450 new apartments and condos in 11 tall buildings.
The City of Burlington still shows the development application on its website and reports that: “the applicants…put these applications on hold in January 2020 and confirmed the hold status of the file in December 2021.”
Also in December 2021, QuadReal’s Senior Vice President for Development John Marotto confirmed to the media that the project had been shelved. “We can’t make the economics work.”
So, why are the five signs still there? Why hasn’t the application been completely withdrawn?
Messages for Mr. Marotto have gone unanswered.
The fact that QuadReal is refurbishing the interiors of units that become vacant adds to the puzzle.
