Nov. 2, 2026 — City of Burlington

The City of Burlington is inviting residents to participate in a review of the city’s Noise and Nuisance Control By-law (19-2003) and share feedback about how construction activities affect their neighbourhood.

The review follows council direction to examine permitted construction hours and gather community feedback on the impacts of construction activity.

In the city’s by-law, construction equipment is defined as:

“Any equipment or device designed and intended for use in construction, or material handling, including but not limited to, air compressors, pile drivers, pneumatic or hydraulic tools, bulldozers, tractors, excavators, trenchers, cranes, derricks, loaders, scrapers, pavers, generators, off-highway haulers or trucks, ditchers, compactors and rollers, pumps, concrete mixers, graders, or other material handling equipment.”

While the by-law regulates certain construction-related noise and impacts, it does not cover construction vehicle backup beeping, honking, workers communicating on-site, or traffic delays related to construction.

Under the city’s current by-law, construction is permitted between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Construction is prohibited on Sundays and statutory holidays unless the city grants an exemption. When an exemption is approved to allow construction outside regular hours, the applicant is required to notify all residences within 150 metres of the project site.

Engagement feedback will help the city better understand residents’ experiences with construction-related noise and neighbourhood impacts and inform potential updates to the city’s Noise and Nuisance Control By-law.
