The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is inviting adults across Halton and Ontario to consider a career in healthcare, as applications are now open for the Personal Support Worker Certificate Program, with Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 intakes available. The in-person program will be delivered at the newly revitalized Robert Bateman Community Centre in Burlington, offering residents an accessible pathway into one of Ontario’s most in-demand professions.

As Ontario continues to face a growing shortage of healthcare workers, the need for Personal Support Workers, commonly known as PSWs, has never been greater. It has been estimated that more than 150,000 PSWs will be needed across the province over the next three years to support hospitals, long-term care homes, assisted living residences, group homes, and community health organizations. The province is also providing incentive funding to help address the demand for workers entering the field.

The Halton District School Board’s PSW Certificate Program is a professionally recognized 20-week program offered in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Students receive classroom instruction in healthcare theory while gaining hands-on experience through clinical practicums and co-operative education placements designed to prepare them for immediate employment upon graduation.

One of the program’s most appealing features is its affordability. The PSW program is currently being offered at a significantly reduced tuition fee of $500, in addition to a $300 non-refundable application fee. This is a substantial reduction from the program’s standard tuition cost of $2,500, making it more accessible for adults seeking a new career or a transition into healthcare.

The Fall 2026 application period is currently open and will remain open until July 31. Registration for the Winter 2027 intake is also open, with applications accepted through December 2026.

Graduates of the program will be equipped to pursue careers in a variety of healthcare settings where they provide essential care and support to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those requiring assistance with daily living. To earn certification, students must successfully complete the program requirements and achieve a minimum score of 70 per cent on the PSW certification examination.

The new home of the program at the Robert Bateman Community Centre, located at 5151 New Street in Burlington, offers a convenient learning environment for local residents while supporting the broader community vision of education, wellness, and lifelong learning.

For Burlington residents considering a career change, returning to the workforce or seeking a meaningful profession focused on helping others, the Halton District School Board’s PSW Certificate Program offers an opportunity to enter a stable and rewarding field while contributing to Ontario’s growing healthcare needs.
