June 6, 2025 — United Way Halton and Hamilton
The financial services community gathered in full force today at the inaugural Champions For Change Financial Services Luncheon, in support of United Way Halton and Hamilton. The event welcomed 170+ professionals from across Halton and Hamilton, and raised over $100,000 to support vital community programs delivered through United Way Halton and Hamilton.
The Champions For Change Luncheon was born from the vision of local community member Marc Hamel, Associate Portfolio Manager with Manulife Wealth, who wanted to create a new opportunity for the financial services sector to step forward and lead with purpose.
“This event was designed to bring people together around one idea, that each of us has the power to be a champion in our own community,” said Hamel. “By showing up, sharing ideas, and giving generously, this group proved that change starts with action.”
The event featured keynote speaker Jayna Hefford, one of the most decorated hockey players in Canadian history. Over her legendary career, Jayna represented Canada at 16 international competitions, earning six silver and an incredible ten gold medals, including four consecutive Olympic golds from 2002 to 2014. Now serving as the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Professional Women’s Hockey League, Jayna shared powerful reflections on resilience, purpose, and the responsibility leaders have to use their platforms to create meaningful change. Her insights inspired attendees to lead with integrity and stay grounded in
community impact.
“Jayna reminded us that being a champion isn’t just about individual success. It’s about lifting others up, even when the path isn’t easy,” said Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton and Hamilton. “Today, this room was filled with people who are ready to step up for their neighbours and communities. That’s what Champions For Change is all about.”
The luncheon is part of United Way’s broader campaign, United in ACTION, a movement focused on creating a more inclusive, resilient, and supported community. At a time when economic uncertainty and growing local pressures are straining social service programs, United Way is working with partners, agency experts, and donors to ensure people can access help when they need it most.
“We are so proud to see this event come to life,” said Park. “It reflects what United Way is built on. Community, compassion, and the courage to act. Our thanks go out to Marc Hamel, our generous sponsors, the event committee, and everyone who stood with us today to be champions for their community.”
Funds raised from this event will support 124 United Way-funded programs that provide crucial services such as housing and food security, mental health support, housing programs, youth mentorship, and more.
