This summer, Peter Thoem spotted a Great Blue Heron in Hendrie Valley, standing in a rather interesting pose, wings dropped and spread open at the elbows. Though he described it rather colourfully (see his website, My Bird of the Day, for more detail), Thoem also noted that the bird may take up this posture in hope of cooling itself on hot days. An angle change and closer view reveals the Heron’s rust-coloured patches of plumage (see below).
