BurlingtonGreen and Rotary Club of Burlington Central invite the community to get outside to take action for our environment, while also learning about local nature, at their co-hosted event, Spring Eco Action at the Beach, taking place on Saturday, May 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Burlington Beach.

Drop-in activities (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) include button making, eco trivia game, eco-action sharing, and climate resources to learn how to reduce your carbon footprint and take action for a greener future. Offerings requiring pre-registration include a guided bird walk, a beach litter clean-up, and a pollinator-friendly nature walk.

Pre-registration is required for the 8:00 a.m. Bird Walk led by avid birder Dave Tourchin from Bird Friendly Hamilton-Burlington. Participants will learn about the interesting birds that live at the beach and those that migrate through our area each year, and how to help protect them.

The Beach Litter Clean-up at 9:30 a.m. also requires pre-registration and provides an opportunity to learn about plastic pollution and help remove litter, plastic waste, and debris from Burlington Beach, ensuring a healthier habitat for wildlife and a cleaner shoreline for all to enjoy. Includes opportunity to participate in the national Butt Blitz seeking to collect and recycle 1 million cigarette butts across Canada!

Community members can also sign up in advance for a Pollinator-Friendly Nature Walk at 11:00 a.m. led by conservation science educator Debra Toor, who will share about native pollinators like butterflies and fascinating bees, as well as the plants and animals that cooperate with them. Information will be available about ways to support pollinators, such as BurlingtonGreen’s Native Plant Sale (on now) and the Butterfly Way Ranger program.

The program is designed to encourage an opportunity to connect with fellow community members, connect with nature, engage in interactive eco-friendly activities together, and learn how to have a lasting impact for a brighter future.

Other spring BurlingtonGreen events include a Zero Waste event on May 24, accepting electronic and other waste, as well as unwanted gold and silver for recycling. Their Community Clean Up continues now through October, inviting 12,000 community members to share their litter clean-up plans, be added to a growing map, and receive free supplies.
