On Saturday, March 15, 2025, young voices will take centre stage at McMaster Continuing Education Centre in Hamilton for “Voices Unleashed: Youth Rising Post-Pandemic,” a transformative youth-led conference designed to empower and inspire. Marking the anniversary of Ontario’s school closures, this groundbreaking event addresses the lasting impact of the pandemic on marginalized youth, particularly newcomers and immigrants, by tackling critical issues such as racial injustice and mental health challenges.
With the support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), Voices Unleashed revives “In This Together” after a two-year pause, expanding its mission with panel discussions, interactive workshops, and meaningful networking opportunities. For just $5, attendees gain access to a full day of engaging discussions, expert-led sessions, industry mentorship, and a community Iftar dinner catered by Masrawy Egyptian Kitchen.
Two impactful youth-led panels will drive the discussions at Voices Unleashed, amplifying the challenges and resilience of marginalized youth. The first panel, “Navigating Hate and Racism Post-Pandemic,” will examine the surge in anti-Asian racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Arab discrimination, and the systemic barriers affecting Black and Indigenous youth. Moderated by Lila Mansour, the conversation will feature local influential voices such as Koubra Haggar, Yasmin Hashi, and Essra Karam.
The second panel, “Post-Pandemic Mental Health Challenges, Systemic Racism, and Recovery Strategies for Marginalized Youth,” will address the ongoing mental health struggles young people face, including grief, isolation, and the urgent need for more inclusive support systems. Moderated by Tulip Marawi, panelists Marya Bangash, Sharon Joy Tung, Zahra Farahmand, and Alisha Haseeb will share their expertise and lived experiences.
“At Abrar Trauma and Mental Health Services, we are committed to creating spaces where young people can raise their voices, be heard, and shape the conversations that affect their lives. Voices Unleashed is more than a conference — it’s a platform for youth to lead, heal, and drive change. By centring their experiences and perspectives, we can build a future that truly reflects their resilience, strength, and vision,” says Abrar Mechmechia, CEO and founder of Abrar Trauma and Mental Health Services, which acts as support for the youth organizers of Voices Unleashed.
In addition to panel discussions, participants can choose from five immersive workshops designed to provide hands-on learning and support. The “State of Youth Consultation Workshop” invites attendees to contribute their voices to the next State of Youth Report, directly influencing government policies and programs. Meanwhile, a focus group by McMaster Research Shop will explore the evolving mental health needs of marginalized youth, offering a platform for young people to share their personal experiences and shape future research.
Those seeking practical mental health strategies can attend “Overcoming Isolation and Depression: Building Connections and Resilience,” led by Wafa Naseem, clinical director of Endless Therapy Lounge. This session will guide participants through creative activities aimed at strengthening emotional resilience and building support networks. For those drawn to creativity, “Nourish the Artist Within,” facilitated by Clarissa and Jenny Vasquez, will provide an introspective space to reconnect with mindfulness, movement, and artistic expression. The Student Commission of Canada offers another unique experience that engages in tea-time conversations, guided nature walks, and community recipe book collaborations, all aimed at fostering cultural connections and well-being.
The event also features exclusive opportunities such as professional LinkedIn headshots, goodie bags, and industry mentorship sessions, ensuring that attendees leave not only inspired but also equipped with tangible resources for their personal and professional growth.
As youth continue to navigate the post-pandemic world, Voices Unleashed offers a space for connection, healing, and empowerment. Whether through meaningful discussions, interactive workshops, or shared meals, this conference is a testament to the resilience and strength of young people determined to rise above challenges and shape a more inclusive future. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this movement — youth from the Hamilton and Halton areas can still secure their ticket and join the conversation on March 15.
