Dare to be Youth (DTBY) recently hosted its annual Impact ’24 luncheon and live auction, bringing together community members to support youth empowerment. Held at Burlington’s Hagerty Garage and Social, the event featured a striking display of cars and motorcycles, setting the scene for an impactful afternoon. Emcee Lohifa Pogoson Acker welcomed guests with her engaging energy, creating an inviting atmosphere for the afternoon’s activities, including a live auction led by the charismatic Layne the Auctionista. Layne inspired attendees to give generously, raising over $25,000 to support DTBY’s initiatives in the Halton and Hamilton regions.

The funds raised will directly support DTBY’s mission to empower high school students and young adults, ages 14 to 24, with leadership development and essential life skills. Shannon Tobin, DTBY’s founder and CEO, thanked attendees for their contributions and in-kind donations, sharing how DTBY’s programs have positively impacted over 1,150 students in Halton. As the organization has seen unprecedented demand for its programs over the past three and a half years, community support has been essential to meeting the needs of local youth. Initiatives like the Community Youth Council (CYC) provide youth with leadership opportunities, mentorship, and life skills, all aimed at fostering resilience and potential.

The afternoon kicked off with a soulful performance from student Raquel Randall, followed by a warm welcome from youth ambassadors Karina and Alex, setting an uplifting tone. Students from DTBY’s Community Youth Council shared personal stories, emphasizing the program’s positive influence on their school and personal lives. One student gave a special shout-out to former Halton District School Board principal Jodie Schnurr for her support in introducing DTBY to students. Later, Ashlee Livingstone spoke on the power of impact, illustrating DTBY’s influence on her life and the real-world changes the organization brings.

Layne the Auctionista had the donations pouring in for DTBY, with an impressive $25,000-plus raised at the event.

Guests enjoyed a hot lunch with refreshments, bought raffle tickets, and filled out donation cards to support DTBY. YESA, the event’s presenting sponsor, added a powerful voice to the day’s message. Founder Corrie Elieff shared his story of resilience, recounting experiences with foster care, addiction, and homelessness. Now based in Burlington, Corrie emphasized YESA’s dedication to preparing youth for successful careers and personal growth.

The event underscored the collective strength of community support in driving positive change for young people. DTBY’s initiatives continue to create lasting impacts, helping youth build essential life skills, leadership abilities, and a strong sense of community. Donations, sponsorships, and volunteer support remain vital to realizing DTBY’s vision, empowering youth to lead purposeful, impactful lives.
