You may be wondering why Peter Thoem chose the American Robin as his bird of the day, as these birds are a common sight in Burlington and the surrounding areas. As it happens, Thoem spotted these birds on August 18 — and the one pictured below is a fledgling, as evidenced by the speckles still visible on its breast, making it a somewhat uncommon sight this late in the summer.
Though this fledgling is not the latest Thoem has seen (he notes in this post on My Bird of the Day that he saw a fledgling Indigo Bunting in late October of last year!), he suspects it to be part of the second or third set of young for its parents — a prolific pair.
