An organization that has continuously shown up for its audience is Halton Black Voices (HBV), and they are once again proving their service to residents of the Halton area with their upcoming event. From August 10 to 11, HBV will be hosting a cookout, transitioning into a campout weekend at Kelso Conservation Area. This will be a community-oriented weekend filled to the brim with food and fun, all with the mission of further bonding the community together.

We talked to a member of their board, Allison Williams, for more information.

What kinds of activities will the group be doing?

The event features a wide range of activities, including games for children, yoga, and meditation sessions for both children and adults, music and dancing, swimming at Kelso Beach, self-guided hikes, outdoor yoga class taught by community partners, art-making during the day, followed by a campfire and sleepover under the stars. Throughout the day, there will also be kayaking and canoeing on the Kelso reservoir, as well as workshops and activities focused on community building and wellness.

What made HBV create this particular event?

The event was created to provide a space for Black community members to come together, celebrate, and heal. It is part of our broader mission to create safe, inclusive spaces where Black people can connect, support one another, and build stronger communities. The cookout and campout weekend allows us to combine relaxation, cultural celebration, and

meaningful conversations in a natural setting, fostering a sense of belonging and collective healing.

What does HBV hope to achieve with the event?

We hope to achieve several key goals during this event. We’d like to strengthen community bonds by providing a space for connection and support, promote wellness and mental health through healing activities and workshops, raise awareness about the importance of creating safe spaces for black people — including the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community — and foster a sense of joy, celebration, and empowerment among participants, and build stronger relationships with allies and community partners.

What is the impact on participants?

Participants often leave the event feeling rejuvenated, connected, and empowered. They gain a deeper sense of community and belonging, as well as access to resources and support that can help them in their personal and professional lives. The event also provides opportunities for learning, growth, and healing, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

This event is open to all community members, including families, youth, and other individuals. HBV especially welcomes Black community members, members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, and other allies who support their mission. Registration can be done online through the registration page on their website. The event starts at 1:00 pm on Saturday and will take place at the Kelso Conservation Area.
