On another Hendrie Valley birding trip, Peter Thoem’s eye was caught by this Eastern Kingbird, hunting for insect prey to bring back to its nest. Says Thoem on his website, My Bird of the Day, “There’s something quite perfect about the stance, and fierce attention of a kingbird poised to zip out for a capture on the fly.” We agree. We also appreciate these birds for eating wasps and flies, though we’d prefer they stay away from bees.
According to Cornell Labs’ All About Birds website, Burlington is within the range of Eastern Kingbirds during the breeding season; their migratory path will later take them south so they can spend the non-breeding season in the warmth of South America.
