Conservation Halton has issued a Flood Watch warning; the City of Burlington has closed several roads due to high rainfall. See below for all messages issued today from the city and Conservation Halton.
Conservation Halton advises that the Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook issued on July 13, 2024, has been upgraded to a Flood Watch. Over the last hour, up to 50 mm of rain has fallen from localized thunderstorm activity through urban Burlington and Oakville. Watercourses in these areas are significantly elevated and at or near bankfull capacity. Additional rainfall will create significant runoff with saturated soil conditions and increase water levels further. Environment Canada has issued a Rainfall Warning suggesting that showers and thunderstorms will continue for the next few hours this afternoon.
Areas of localized flooding in urban areas are likely. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should be on alert. Regular inspection and removal of debris at culverts and drainage inlets is recommended.
All watercourses and shoreline areas should be considered dangerous during this time. Conservation Halton is asking all residents to stay away from watercourses, shorelines and structures such as bridges, culverts, dams and break walls. High water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and shorelines make these locations extremely dangerous. Please alert children in your care of these imminent dangers.
Conservation Halton will continue to monitor stream and weather conditions and will issue an update to this Flood Watch message as conditions warrant.
This Flood Watch message will be in effect through Tuesday July 16, 2024, and will either be updated or terminated.
Road closures by City of Burlington
Due to today’s heavy rainfall, several temporary road closures are in place due to flooding. These include:
- Plains Road East at Brant Street
- Plains Road East at Francis Road
- Mount Forest Road at Brant Street
- Willowbrook Road between Plains Road East and Enfield Road
Closed roads are barricaded until the flood water recedes. Please allow time to detour as appropriate.
How to get in touch with the city regarding flooded areas
Due to the heavy rainfall, there are several roads, boulevards, and parking areas throughout the city that are flooding. If you see a flooded area, you can report it by calling 905-335-7777 or by emailing city@burlington.ca. Some roads have been temporarily closed and you are advised to give yourself plenty of time in order to detour around as appropriate.
Please note, we are responding to a high volume of calls about flooding today, and wait times are longer than usual.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
If you have flooding on private property, please call 3-1-1 for Halton Region response.
Do not walk or drive through flooded roads. Your vehicle could become stuck in as little as 30 cm of water.
