The Sahaja Yoga Meditation Network is presenting two free events this week, open to anyone interested: a lecture on the science of meditation followed by a meditation session on July 3 and a physical practice and meditation session on July 6 in celebration of Canada Day. Both events are part of the ongoing 100 Seeds of Joy project.

The Wednesday night lecture is entitled “The Power Lies Within You: The Restorative Power of Meditation” and will run from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Orchard Community Hub. Ana-Bianca Popa, M.Sc. (in neuroscience), will speak on the research supporting meditation’s ability to calm the mind. After the lecture, there will be hands-on meditation exercises and a chakra workshop.

The Heart Opening Flow event, also to take place at the Orchard Community Hub, starts with a beginner-friendly gentle yoga flow from 11 a.m. to 11: 15 a.m., to relax the body and mind. The physical practice may be done outdoors, though this is weather-dependent. Then will come a guided meditation session emphasizing the heart chakra until 12:30 p.m.

Focusing on the heart chakra leads to self-realization, according to the 100 Seeds of Joy event page, and the meditation will also work towards the “realization of our shared togetherness…in Canada and in the world.”

A light potluck will follow meditation on July 6, and participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share with others.
