Scams, spam, and frauds are getting ever more sophisticated. By using the latest technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), scammers are able to access personal details, replicate voices, and imitate credible institutions. Scams are evolving at a rapid pace and we need to be aware and alert in order to protect ourselves, our families, and our assets.

This month, Empowered Seniors Speakers Series is pleased to welcome Detective Constable Dwain Newham from Halton Regional Police for a seminar, Frauds & Scams – Stay Safe and Protect Yourself. Detective Newham will share the latest scams happening in Burlington, what strategies to use to avoid becoming a victim, and how to be more aware of fraud.

During this seminar, you’ll learn:

  • How the fraudsters and scammers target victims
  • How to be aware but not afraid
  • About the tools scammers use
  • What the latest scams are and other fraudulent trends
  • What questions to ask when you suspect you are dealing with a scammer
  • When to contact the police

Join us on June 12, 2024, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in welcoming Detective Newham of the Halton Regional Police Service, 30 Division, Criminal Investigation  Bureau, Elder Abuse and Financial Crime.

This will be an information-packed event, so please reserve your free seat by visiting Empowered Seniors Speakers Series or calling 905-330-5201. Also note our new location, The Burlington Art Gallery at 1333 Lakeshore Rd in Burlington.

As always, many thanks to the Speaker Series Educational Partners who help to make these events possible.

Marion Goard began hosting the Empowered Seniors Speakers Series in summer of 2023. Each seminar has a different theme, all on themes that are better considered earlier rather than later, whether you are an older adult yourself or are helping your aging parents. Watch the first seminar of 2024, on healthcare for seniors, below; topics discussed include how to access home care services; what the funding options are; the difference between long-term care (LTC) and retirement homes; what advance care planning is; and how to access services provided by caregivers, personal support workers, and nurses.

Watch a previous Empowered Seniors seminar here; this one is entitled “The Silent Worry and Being Prepared Financially for Aging.”
