Gardeners rejoice: not only is it time to start thinking about what to plant, but there are also two local organizations selling plants.
BurlingtonGreen is putting on its first-ever plant sale, offering packs of native plants specific to certain sun and shade conditions, and St. Matthew-on-the-Plains has organized its annual plant sale as well; both of these sales require pre-ordering plants and picking them up on-site. Saturday, May 25, 2024, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., is the pick-up date for St. Matthew’s, in their Parish Hall, while Sunday, May 26, 2024, between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., is the date for the BurlingtonGreen plant pick-up, at their Eco Hub by the beach.
Even better for plant lovers is that BurlingtonGreen and St. Matthew’s are selling different plants.
St. Matthew’s is offering various colours of geraniums and sunpatiens (in flats of 10 or singles, at $34 and $3.40, respectively)), as well as hanging baskets in red, salmon, pink, or fuschia for $34 each. Orders must be received by Friday, May 10.
BurlingtonGreen’s mixed-plant four-packs, each $30, are the Sun-Loving Garden Kit, with spotted bee balm, butterfly milkweed, narrow-leaved vervain, and anise hyssop; the Shade-Loving Garden Kit, with wild columbine, wild geranium, large-leaf aster, and blue stem goldenrod; and the Monarch Garden Kit, with New England aster, common milkweed, smooth oxeye, and wild bergamot. Pollinator seed packets are also available: black-eyed Susan, common milkweed, purple coneflower, and wild bergamot seeds will be packaged by volunteers. Seed packets cost $4 each.
All proceeds from BurlingtonGreen’s plant kits and seed sales will go towards their Nature-Friendly Burlington programs.
Native plants are important for pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and because they originate from the local habitat, they thrive in our climate.
