This Osprey was photographed by Peter Thoem in Hendrie Valley late last month, a bird described by Peter as a “lifer.” In birding, a “lifer” refers to the first time a particular species is viewed and identified by a birder.

In his blog, My Bird of the Day, Peter describes the history of Ospreys in the U.K., where he is from originally, their extinction in the 19th century and their 20th century return. Ospreys have also had a tough go recently, being chased off their preferred perches: check out Peter’s blog for more details.
