Polls closed at 8 p.m. today and preliminary election results are noted below. As soon as possible after voting day, the clerk will declare the candidates who received the highest number of votes to be elected (Municipal Elections Act, s. 55). Burlington’s city clerk Kevin Arjoon will make the declaration related to Burlington City Council and Burlington’s Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board trustees.

Halton’s regional clerk Graham Milne will make the declaration related to Regional Chair. The region’s website halton.ca shows the polls reported and the breakdown of votes for each of the three candidates by municipality (Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville). As should be the case, results from previous elections are posted to the region’s website (2018, 2014, 2010, 2006).

The number of declined and rejected ballots will also be provided by the clerk. A recount would only be required if two or more candidates receive the same number of votes and a recount would be held within 15 days after the clerk’s declaration of the election results (Municipal Elections Act, s. 56)

Election signs are regulated by the City of Burlington through an election sign bylaw, which was updated in February 2022. Election signs cannot be displayed more than four days after the day of the election (Part 4:  Timing of Display, s. c) so we can look forward to the removal of those signs this week.

Thank you to all candidates who put their names forward and to all the volunteers who helped with their election campaigns. Thank you to everyone who voted in this municipal election. As you have heard before, your vote is your voice, and this group of elected representatives will have significant impact in our community for the next four years. Municipal and regional government services impact our lives every day.

We will continue election reporting over the next couple of weeks and you can also stay current through the City of Burlington’s My Vote Burlington pages at https://myvote.burlington.ca/en/for-voters/
