Aldershot’s new rainbow crosswalk has arrived. Crews will complete the installation of the new feature this week. It is located at the intersection of Plains Road West and Botanical Drive, near the Royal Botanical Gardens.
The colourful walkway is one of three to be constructed this year in the city in addition to one that already exists downtown.
The sidewalks are meant to signal the city’s support of Burlington’s Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual community.
The new crosswalks caused some controversy earlier this year, not because of what they stand for, but because of the cost, the locations, and the manner in which Mayor Marianne Meed Ward handled the entire situation. Some of her council colleagues were offended by the process and aggressiveness of her advocacy for the crosswalks.
