Since the beginning of the school year in September, requests to the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) to assist elementary and secondary students in financial need have increased significantly.
HLF has provided support for food, clothing, school supplies, and learning opportunities for 500 students of the Halton District School Board (HDSB) this fall, a 25% increase over this time last year. All requests to HLF for assistance come from HDSB educators on behalf of their students.
HLF is currently running its annual “No Student Left Behind” campaign to raise critical donations for its Eliminating Barriers to Learning fund. The fund provides financial support for basic necessities that help kids come to school and stay focused on learning.
“Halton families experience financial stress for many reasons, but job losses and reduced work hours due to COVID-related shutdowns are major contributors this year,” says Lesley Mansfield, CEO of the Halton Learning Foundation.
Mansfield says just a few dollars can make a difference to a student and their family. “Less than $200 will purchase school lunches for one month. A monthly gift of $10 can purchase a winter coat and boots so a child can get to school and participate in outdoor learning activities in the cold weather.”
